"Safe" UI Mode when using Grip in action settings#59

D

With the upcoming Fjorden grip means you could be the first app to offer a UI mode optimized for action shooting situations. Help solve the common problem of mistaken button presses during action situations. For example, often taking a one-handed picture while cycling means inadvertently touching the screen as I grab the phone leads to missing a shot because i’ve touched the image window and the app to manually focus, or I switch to an undesirable setting such as video or time-lapse mode or to my photo library! Most of the time I don’t even know it until I look at the camera back. By the time I’m able to fix the setting, the moment is gone. The new grip can solve this! With essential shutter/focus/zoom buttons transferred to the grip, the screen can now offer a tamper resistant mode that reduces the chance of these mistaken interactions so I can grab the camera with confidence and shoot, not worrying that I will mistakenly change a setting. “Safe” approaches could take the form of screen-lock, long press to activate a button, or swipes.

Glad you agree. As bezels have grown smaller over time, it’s nearly impossible to hold the phone with one hand without triggering something on the screen. This is actually the use case that led me to your product last year and buy it.

Interesting point when the bezels in the iPhone 14 will apparently be even smaller!

Great idea. I use my camera in much the same way and the Grip will hopefully make it even safer to shoot one handed.

I also found myself hitting the setting buttons constantly by mistake.

One way to minimize these errors would by having one settings button only and eliminating the grip settings button, which settings are accessible through the settings screen anyway. This might also give us the option for a longer on-screen shutter button.

Another way to avoid pressing the setting buttons my mistake would be to require a double or triple tap to activate them. Or perhaps a swipe in a specific direction that is uncommon when holding the phone.

A workaround in the interim for those (myself included) upvoting this suggestion, you are able with the latest mobile iOS releases to create a shortcut that deactivates certain screen real estate and/or buttons while using a particular app. Generally this is ideal for parental control, but I can see how you could run the shortcut to activate the Fjorden app, thereby disabling screen function and unintentional button presses. Not a particularly ideal cycling solution - unless you go one step further and activate the shortcut through the iPhone 15’s action button, or perhaps the 2 or 3 button back tap accessibility feature.
