External Samsung SSD storage#291

E

It would be nice if there was a way to store a Samsung SSD to store Pro Res. Also, having a wireless charger would be a gamee changer.

Here’s a link to a youtube video regarding the SSD.

We would love to be able to offer recording to external storage devices, but as far as I know this isn’t possible for 3rd party apps right now. Maybe Apple will offer an API for it in the future 🤞

Apologies, I was referring to creating a cavity or opening between the phone and the grip where the external storage could be held. I’ve found a lot of videos where folks are connecting external Samsung storage devices (T5, T7 & T9) on the new iPhone 15.

As a person that travels a lot, I find myself carrying my Mac Book Pro to download photos & video from my iPhone 13 Max Pro regularly. This is not feassible if I’m backpacking through Europe. Having a way to attach a Samsung storage would double if not triple my storage capacity wiyjout having to carry my Mac Book Pro.

I made various submissions from a backpacking/travel mindset and it would be great if somme of these changes to the grip could be considered.

Ah, got it. As soon as Apple opens up their API for third-party apps to record to external devices we will look into option.

I believe this is now avaible in the iPhone 15.

In one of the videos I watcheed, once you connect the SSD you will see “USB-C” on the phone. Then, you go to “files” folders and there you can see the external drive and seelect it. Once selected the photos / video will be saved to the SSD. it also allows you to mmove the photos from the SSD to the phone.

Direct recording to an SSD is only available in Apple’s camera app, this feature is not possible for other apps.

The Blackmagic app already allows direct recording to an external drive.

On a side note, form factorwise, support for an SD card would be more ideal compared to an SSD imo.

If you watch the video the SSD is very compact and could easily slip underneath the grip (assuming the grip is updated).

This will give the user the flexibility to transfer photos/videos from the iPhone freeing up space in the phone. On the other hand, with the app you mentioned you could record direectly to the external drive.

By the way, the drive in the video aree available in 1TB all the way up to 4TB.

A concern with SSD compared to an SD card, depending on how the grip is designed, it could limit which SSD can be used. If someone wants to use a different brand or if newer models have a different shape, the grip is obsolete.

SD cards are standardized, smaller and can probably be incorporated into the current grip design without too much of a redesign.

The other suggestion I submited was to have a additional 1/4” 20 on top so the user could attach an SSD via a SmallRig adapter. SmallRig sells a Samsung SSD specific holder and a universal SSD holder.

The user can decide which holder to buy. I doubt Samsung will change their SSD design since it’s been the same since I remeber T5 and now they’re coming out with T9.

I agree there’s no guarantee the design will remain the same. I still prefer an SSD over a SD especially for long trips.

Yah agreed, i suggest that they modify magsafe adapter with more attachment points. Right now it just has a tripod screw mount and a cold shoe. I think they could add more to make it more substantial and attractive as an addon for utility.

Hopefully they will do something, I think it would be a missed opportunity if they don’t take advantage of the USB C connectivity going forward. At the moment the best we have is to jerryrig something with a usb hub. Functional, but a mess lol. Someone else will eventually find a way to make it a more practical set up.

I checked the Blackmagic app, you were right. It is possible to record directly to an SSD. Def. an interesting feature. We will keep it in mind, but I can’t promise anything.
